Why did God send a flood in the days of Noah

God's Redemption Plan and the Flood

Many people will say "How come God sent a flood to kill every body", "Why did God judge the earth". But what you will find is the flood was a redemption plan not one of destruction. God did not send all the people who were killed in the flood to hell. I will show this from scripture. God used the flood to restore righteousness to the earth.

The world had become wicked

The reason for God sending the flood is as follows.

Gen 6:11-13 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

So God came up with a plan, his current plan of evangelism using the stories of creation were not working. Without evidence of God people had become wicked, the whole of creation had become evil. Yet one man had remained righteous, Noah. So God commanded him to build a boat, for himself and his family, then God sent the flood to remove evil. He could have chosen to send Jesus at this time, he could have performed miracles like at the time of Moses, but he choose to use destruction.

Gen 7:1 And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.

The people who died in the flood did not all go to hell

One question that arises in the minds of many people is why did God kill so many people and only save Noah. Statistically this is terrible, thousands, possibly millions of people died, and only one man in the generation was considered good enough to live. We have to answer this question because it reveals the heart of God. The bible says of God:

1 John 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

1 John 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Ezekiel 18:23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

Ezekiel 18:31-32 Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live!

We see from the above verses that God is Love, that he takes no pleasure in the death of wicked men and women, but prefers that they come to repentance, which simply put means a change of heart. So why did God not use love at the time of the flood, it is not loving to kill millions of people sending them all to hell, and saving only one. Be honest with yourself for a minute, how is that loving, kind, gentle. It does not match the fruits of the Spirit as revealed by God in the bible. Well what you will find is God did not send these people to hell. See the following scripture.

1Peter 3:19-20 By which also he [Jesus] went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.... 1Peter 4:6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

So if you read that without changing the plain meaning of scripture it says "Jesus went and preached to the people who had died during the time of Noah, so that they could be judged according to the normal principals that apply to living people, so that they too could live in the presence of God.", that is what it says, many people have made up interpretations, and said Jesus was preaching to dead saints, but the bible says not dead saints, but the people who were killed at the time of Noah. I have heard some people says the following verse Hebrews 9:27-28 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; Suggesting that it is impossible for Jesus to have preached to sinners, because they only get one chance. But this is a New Testament verse referring to us as Christians, and people after Christ. Christ has chosen in our age to only give us this one life time to repent, and will provide us will sufficient evidence before we die, we will all have the gospel preached to us. But at the time of Noah there was only one righteous man among millions, the only way God could have saved the millions was to make Noah like Jesus performing miracles, but that was not God's plan. God's plan was to start over with one righteous family. He then destroyed every one else. But these people who he destroyed were given justice at the time of Christ, Jesus went to them and shared the eternal gospel with them, in the same way it is shared to us, so that those who believed could be given eternal life. You might disagree with me and interpret those verses in another way, but I have to ask you, how good do you think you are, were you saved because of how good you were, or because of the mercy of the gospel.

1Jn 4:9-10 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Are millions of people deserving of eternal hell fire, or are they worthy of the same chance that we had. There was not the Gospel of Jesus, no bible, there was not even the Law of Moses, without God people could not choose to do good, they had no direction. Remember God is love, the fruits of the Spirit are Love, Joy, Peace, Gentleness, Long suffering, etc, not judgment, anger, wrath

But what about us today, well God has a new plan, it is to share the gospel with every creature, using us. The Holy Spirit now fills all believers. That is millions of Jesus clones, all capable of receiving from God, and preaching to others, the love and mercy of Christ. God has ordained that people only get one life to repent of their sins. If you are reading about the gospel you must receive it. The people that were killed at the time of Noah still had to believe the gospel, you have to receive Christ. You can't go on with out a relationship with God and think you will get into heaven. But be assured God will not leave any person without the chance of salvation, he is Love, he is justice.

Evangelism and our age

The statistics at the time of Noah looked bad, and they are not much better today. The gospel is not reforming the majority of the world. Maybe 10-20% of people in the world are currently believers. Now this is a reflection not upon God, or his willingness to save others, and give every one an equal chance, but is a reflection upon the churches inaction. We all could do more to save others, we all need too. But let me assure you God does not send the remaining 80% to hell with no chance. I know of many people who have had Near Death Experiences, where they are dying, and God comes to them and speaks to them the gospel himself, and they are saved. Some of these people have returned to life, and shared their near death salvation experience, click the following link for an example of an NDE. As far as I am concerned regarding evangelism God does not need us to send people to heaven, we are not responsible for that burden. We are only responsible for what Adam was given dominion for. Adam was given dominion over the earth, to subdue it. We must bring the earth into subjection to the will of God by sharing our faith and experiences with others. To give people the knowledge of how to live a heavenly life on earth. God's dominion on the other hand is the dominion of Heaven and Hell, he is responsible for all judgment regard who makes it to heaven and who does not.
